Interesting book at moments, but for the most part it feels like a filler book that is leading to Children of Dune。 Compared to Dune, it is somehow smaller in scope, restrained and empty。 What saves it from being a terrible read is it's shortness, it quickly establishes new lines of plot and what we need to know for the next book that is part two of the same story, so I hope the next book will be better, a fitting conclusion。 Interesting book at moments, but for the most part it feels like a filler book that is leading to Children of Dune。 Compared to Dune, it is somehow smaller in scope, restrained and empty。 What saves it from being a terrible read is it's shortness, it quickly establishes new lines of plot and what we need to know for the next book that is part two of the same story, so I hope the next book will be better, a fitting conclusion。 。。。more

After really enjoying the world and story that Herbert created and told in the first book, and seeing the poor reviews for the sequel, I really wanted to love this book。 At some moments I did, but overall I felt that the story told here was drawn out and stretched thin; even though the length of this book was only a a third of the first。 I felt that subplots were not fleshed out and just left me wondering why thirty pages were given to begin them when they played such a small role in the end。 Wh After really enjoying the world and story that Herbert created and told in the first book, and seeing the poor reviews for the sequel, I really wanted to love this book。 At some moments I did, but overall I felt that the story told here was drawn out and stretched thin; even though the length of this book was only a a third of the first。 I felt that subplots were not fleshed out and just left me wondering why thirty pages were given to begin them when they played such a small role in the end。 What I did enjoy most was how Herbert continued to flesh out the story of Paul wrestling with his responsibly and the consequences of his actions that began in the first book。 。。。more

This is clearly a 'middle book' between book 1 and book 3, and it served its purpose。 It's the Empire Strikes Back of the series--not in that it's good, but in that it scatters our heroes to the winds, leaving an uncertain future where anything could happen。 There were clearly questions in here about the challenges of ruling, self-determination, etc。 Herbert was trying to do a "what if power corrupts" thing。。。but I already know that power corrupts! I bet at the time it was sick tho。 This is clearly a 'middle book' between book 1 and book 3, and it served its purpose。 It's the Empire Strikes Back of the series--not in that it's good, but in that it scatters our heroes to the winds, leaving an uncertain future where anything could happen。 There were clearly questions in here about the challenges of ruling, self-determination, etc。 Herbert was trying to do a "what if power corrupts" thing。。。but I already know that power corrupts! 。。。more

I understand why people may be disappointed in this one。 After Dune being roughly 600 pages, and this being half of that length, it does feel like a novel that’s been split in half。 However! There is so much to unravel with this one, and a lot of big events happen that shocked me for sure。 I definitely think this is a book that may get looked over on a first read through, but one you’d find something new in if you reread it。 Excited to continue with Children of Dune!

Better than the first book at least。 Still a lot wrong with it I disliked。

。。。more

I think this Dune book is more controversial for the fanbase, but I was personally a big fan。 Some of the things that happen are a little weird, but I think it was a great way to continue the series and set up stuff later in the series。

I feel like this book was a good preparation for the new marvel movie the multiverse because reading from Paul infinite futures perspective it felt like he’s taking about a multitude of multiverses。 I liked the lyrical approach to the writing。 I also like knowing that this book is doing its own thing and you can either get off the train of confusion and madness or enjoy the ride。 I definitely enjoyed the ride and after passing the 50th page mark I kept coming back to this book in and way that I I feel like this book was a good preparation for the new marvel movie the multiverse because reading from Paul infinite futures perspective it felt like he’s taking about a multitude of multiverses。 I liked the lyrical approach to the writing。 I also like knowing that this book is doing its own thing and you can either get off the train of confusion and madness or enjoy the ride。 I definitely enjoyed the ride and after passing the 50th page mark I kept coming back to this book in and way that I didn’t with dune。 It may due the fact that I am more invested in the charters and the fact that I accepted that this book will be a crazy time, and therefore looking forward to it。 The ending of the sequel gave the feeling like it could’ve been the end of the series。 As if the ending it gave could’ve been the final ending and life just went on in the book。 I’m unsure if I’m exited or nervous about the next few books but we will see。 Very much recommend and also suggest having sticky notes on hand because there are some killer quotes。 9。13。21 2:21 am 。。。more

A lot of people recommend only reading the first novel in the Dune series (Dune itself)。 Some others recommend reading only the first few that Frank Herbert himself finished。 Still more quite enjoy all the ones his son has written。 I don't expect I'll go that far, but I was curious about the first few sequels so I thought I'd give Messiah a go。Most of what makes the original great is still here, but fundamentally Messiah just seems unnecessary。 There's a big time skip and then the plot revolves A lot of people recommend only reading the first novel in the Dune series (Dune itself)。 Some others recommend reading only the first few that Frank Herbert himself finished。 Still more quite enjoy all the ones his son has written。 I don't expect I'll go that far, but I was curious about the first few sequels so I thought I'd give Messiah a go。Most of what makes the original great is still here, but fundamentally Messiah just seems unnecessary。 There's a big time skip and then the plot revolves around the ongoing jihad of unbelievable proportion (61 billion killed?)。 The world is still incredible and the internal monologues are as perfect as they are in the first book, so why not enjoy the characters a little more, even if the experience seems superfluous。 。。。more

Dune Part 1 was a fascinating mess。 Like all great art it held the promise of so much more。Sequels are regularly uninspired and largely unnecessary but they expand on a universe that you love。 This one however managed to contract the epic world of Dune into a number of what could essentially have been Zoom conference calls。 This is 300 pages of talking heads doing a "tell don't show" with ridiculous language, ridiculous! Prose and dialog was never great in Dune but it didn't get in the way。 Here the prose feels like padding and the dialog makes you wonder how Herbert even finished the book。After reading this bit I just wanted the book to be over: “Hai! Hai! What a callous lout you’ve become。 And you said you came seeking truth。”“Perhaps I only seek the future。”“Well spoken。 Now we know each other。 When two thieves meet they need no introduction。”“So were thieves。 What do we steal?”“Not thieves but dice。 And you came here to read my spots。 I, in turn, read yours。 And lo! You have two faces!” Where Dune Part 1 felt like a story of a thousand pages condensed into 500, Dune Part 2 felt like a story of a page and a half blown up to 500 pages (and the book only has 290)。 There is absolutely no world building here。 In fact there is some world un-building sprinkled throughout the text via references to the "ancient" world (namely Lebanon)。 Also, at some point Paul's BFF (from Part 1) Stilgar is sent off screen to do homework on Hitler。The ending could have been good, I guess but I just didn't feel it, sorry。This is from page 130: “Ahhh,” he said。“Ahhh? What does that mean – ahhh?” She was suddenly angry with him and the reason for it escaped her。 The story could have just ended there。 It feels like a natural breaking point。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This book in the Dune saga explores the solitary life of leadership, set against the blessing and curse of prescience。 There is a transformation of Paul in this book that is unsettling for the hero worshippers of the original Dune book。 As with all transformations, beauty is in the eye of the beholder。 Can a person hate a thing they sought to accomplish once accomplished? Absolutely loved Dune。 Read this one to and I kinda regret it。 I do not think I will continue with the rest。 Dune will just have be treated like a complete standalone from now on by me。

3。5 StarNot sure if I enjoyed the sequel as much as the original。 A book about Paul slowly descends into madness。 I had skipped some of the monologue parts in the story as they do become lengthy and repetitive。 In saying that, it is still worthing reading。
